FAQS SYSTEMS

1. What Are the Advantages of Data Compass (DC) on Logical Data Recovery Software?

  • DC can access and scan the patient drive which has been no longer detected by the computer because of severe bad sector problem.
  • DC can read data from bad sectors, which can’t be done by traditional data recovery software.
  • DC adopts physical write blocker and ShadowDisk technology to make sure no change or damage will be occur to the patient drive; this is very important and is an advantage especially for customers who works in data recovery companies (they can promise their customers that even if we can’t recover your data, we will return the drive to you in its original status).
  • DC is a hardware-software complex product, which allows users to conduct many low-level operations towards the patient hard drive when doing data recovery, therefore to increase the depth and success rate of data recovery.
  • 2. What Are the Advantages of Data Compass Compared with Other Disk Imaging Products?

  • DC adopts “SA Analog” technology. Aiming at those drives which have media defects in the SA, which is being undetected in the BIOS (so far no tool in the world can fix this kind of problem), Data Compass bypasses the SA boot failure, and then by reading only the key modules such as P-List from the SA to access the user data area directly for data recovery.
  • The Pioneered Disk Image Technique - ShadowDisk, which images the sector physically from the defective drive to a functioning drive at the same time when the sector is being requested. So that each sector being requested will first be imaged to a good drive, and then the read/write request will be directed to the image disk. You don't need to spend lots of time to create an image of the whole hard disk, but actually you are working on an image when using DC with the patient drive.
  • DC hardware part connects to your computer via USB cable, which enables you to work data recovery from even a laptop, no special socket required.
  • DC adopts pioneered read algorithm, different experiments have indicated that DC reads the hard drive with bad sector problem at least 3 times faster than any other similar products.
  • DC hardware is compatible with any of the logical data recovery software. You can use any other data recovery software of your own to perform file retrieval. This is very important especially when one customer has been very familiar with his own software.
  • 3. What Are the Differences between Data Compass and Power Data Extractor?

Data Compass distinguishes itself with Power Data Extractor a lot. Power Data Extractor is only an imaging tool which works in the DOS. It can not deal with failed hard drive. But for Data Compass, it is an Windows version tool which not only includes all the functions of Power Data Extractor but also adopts many advanced technology. Such as, “Analog technology”, ShadowDisk, Write Blocker function, and logical data recovery software(DR-Studio) , Etc. All this can highly protect your data and your source disk and give you a priority to your important data.

    4. Can Data Compass Repair firmware Corruption?

Data Compass is designed for data recovery only and can’t repair firmware-related problem. For firmware problem, you need to use our HD Doctor Suite.

    5. What is the Primary Configuration Required for Data Compass?

    The Basic configuration(PC or Laptop): 865 chipset motherboard with 2 USB interfaces; Celeron 1.0 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, DVD-ROM;

Recommended configuration: 915chipset motherboard with 2 USB interfaces; Pentium 4 1.5 GHz CPU or faster, 1024 MB RAM, DVD-ROM.

    6. What’s the Difference between Shadow Disk and Imaging Disk?

Shadow Disk is a hard drive used to temporarily store the image of the data and protect the source disk and increase the read speed and read ability. It is effective only after you connect it with Data Compass. While the Imaging tool is used when you decide to clone the whole hard disk. Using a imaging disk to copy the whole disk has a high possibility to damage the source disk and reduce the read speed, even the data recovery process will be hang when you enables the imaging disk.

    7. Why I Can’t Register My Data Compass?

There are two reasons for that:

  • PC Configuration. We have tested in PC with Intel 845/865/915 chipset Motherboard and we recommend Intel 915 chipset Motherboard. Further more, USB interface of Data Compass adopts the standard of USB 2.0, so make sure there is USB 2.0 driver installed in your PC.
  • Operation System. We recommend you install English OS in the first time as we find registration fails on non-English OS.
  • 8. How Does Data Compass Work on Undetected Drives?

Data Compass can bypass the SA boot failure, and then by reading only the key modules such as P-List from the SA to access the user data area directly for data recovery. Till now, this function only can be used for undetected Hitachi Drives. However, we are making new upgrades and plan to add more undetected drives late of this year.
